- Elina defeated the Dutch Kiki Bertens in the semi-final of WTA Finals: 7-5 6-7(5) 6-4.
Elina won the first break-point of the opening set in the fourth game but the Dutch immediately fought it back. Both kept winning their service games until the twelfth game when Elina won another break-point and sealed her victory in the set.
It was Bertens who won an early break-point in the second set and was leading up to the ninth game. Then Bertens did not manage to serve for the set and lost a triple set-point. Thus, the score became equal again and the winner was to be decided at the sharp tie-break and the Dutch played slightly better in the very end of it.
Elina broke Bertens’ serve in the first game of the decisive and immediately lost her own service game after 13 minutes of struggle. Fortunately, she won another break-point and kept this advantage till the very end. The match had lasted for more than 150 minutes.
“It’s an incredible feeling as we had a really hard battle today. I am so happy to win as it means so much for me. I am glad that I can share these moments with you, guys”, said Elina after the match.
“Physical condition became crucial in the very end. I had to run and fight for each point. We both played and served well and it was a hard match. I am really happy that I won”.
Elina’s opponent in the decisive match of WTA Finals will be the winner of the other semi-final between Karolina Pliskova and Sloane Stephens.
