Elina defeated the reigning champion of WTA Finals Caroline Wozniacki in the third round of the White Group: 5-7 7-5 6-3.
Wozniacki had won the first break-point of the opening set and had preserved her lead till the eighth game when Elina converted her only break-point opportunity and equalled the score. Wozniacki won another game on Elina’s service and served for the set in the twelfth game.
The winner of the second set would automatically advance to the semi-final – Elina needed just a set to seal her spot in the top-4 whereas the Dane had to win the entire match.
Both players won a break-point at the beginning of the second set and the winner was decided in the twelfth game when Wozniacki was serving. Elina did her best and spent four set-points before she finally managed to win the set and seal her spot in the semi-final of WTA Finals.
Each player was winning her service games at the beginning of the third set but then Elina won another break-point in the eighth game. She also was 0-40 down upon serving for the match but equalled the score, saved another break-point and finally won the game and the entire match.
Thus, Elina has won all three matches at the group stage and became the winner of the White group. Her semi-final opponent will be the runner-up of the Red group.
