- Elina defeated the Chinese Qiang Wang in the third round: 6-4 6-4.
Elina won a break-point at the beginning of the opening set and grabbed a 4-1 lead. The Chinese managed to level the score but Elina won two following games and the whole set.
Qiang Wang took a 3-1 lead in the second set but Elina managed to win four games in a row and then sealed her victory in the tenth game. The match had lasted for 69 minutes. Elina now has a 3-0 lead in her head-to-head record with the Chinese.
“I slightly let my opponent fight back into the match in the opening set. She also increased the quality of her shots in the second set”, said Elina after the match. “I tried to quickly react and wait for the opportunities and I think that I managed to fulfil them. I played really aggressively”.
Elina’s next opponent is the World No. 18 Anastasia Sevastova from Latvia. The players have met only once. Back in 2013 Elina defeated the Latvian in the quarterfinal of the clay WTA125K tournament in Cali.
“As for the next opponent, the game of Anastasia Sevastova is not easy to predict. She also uses a lot of slices and has various other shots. I have to do my best. I will also try to properly recover as I also have a match in mixed doubles today. And I’ll definitely enjoy my victory today”.
