Elina Svitolina defeated the American Sachia Vickery in the first round of US Open: 6-3 1-6 6-1.

Elina lost her service game at the very beginning of the opening set but fought it back and won five games in a row being 0-2 down. Such a lead was enough for her to close the first set. Vickery also grabbed the lead at the beginning of the second set and this time Elina did not manage to level the score. The American lost only a single game during the entire set.

Nonetheless, the decisive was ultimately controlled by Elina who won five games in a row. Vickery secured her serve in the sixth game and then Elina sealed her victory and advanced to the second round.

“Both of us played well today and Vickery showed really great tennis in the second set. I tried to quickly react and did my best to remain fresh.

You won’t trust me if I say that noone is worried on the first day of a Grand Slam tournament. It’s a usual thing, a part of tennis and a part of participation at such tournaments. I enjoy playing under pressure. We prepare for this and such moments make you even more confident”, said Elina during her on-court interview after the match.

Elina’s next opponent will be the winner of the match between Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland and the German Tatjana Maria.
