Elina defeated the Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round of Western and Southern Open: 7-6(1) 4-6 6-4.  

The Ukrainian had a 4-1 lead in the opening set but Kuznetsova managed to fight back the lost service and was even serving for the set. Elina won a break-point, then immediately lost her own service game and had to fight back another break-point. Thus, the winner of the set was decided at the tie-break and Elina lost only a single point and took the set.  

Kuznetsova won two games in a row after 4-4 score in the second set and turned the match to the decider. Elina had a 4-1 lead and was even serving for the match upon 5-2 score. The Russian managed to win a break-point but in the tenth game Elina converted her second match-point opportunity into a victory and advanced to the third round.  

Elina’s opponent on the way to the quarterfinal will be the winner of the match between the American Amanda Anisimova and the Croatian Petra Martic.
