Elina defeated the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round of Rolland Garros: 7-5 6-3.

The Australian won the first break-point of the opening set and then one more, taking a 5-1 lead. However, Elina managed to pull herself together and won six games in a row securing the victory in the first set. The following set was fully-controlled by Elina who won two more break-points on her opponent’s serve and sealed the first victory at Rolland Garros 2018.

“It wasn’t an easy start. I really had to fight my way back to the match. Ajla was playing really well in the first set. Opening matches are always difficult and I had to increase the quality of my play. I am really happy with this result and the way I played. It was really important for me not to lose the opening set and save it. Fortunately, I did it”, said Elina during her post-match interview.

Elina’s next opponent in the second round is the World No. 84 Viktoria Kuzmova from Slovakia who defeated the Italian Francesca Schiavone on two tie-breaks. It will be the first match between the players.
