In a tight battle for the spot in the quarterfinal Elina lost to American Madison Keys: 6-7 (2) 6-1 4-6.

In exactly two hours of the match Elina served one ace to five doubles faults, made five breaks on Keys' service games. Her opponent responded with four aces, one double fault and four breaks.

However, Elina finished her US Open campaign with a personal record: she had never been past the third round of the American major before.

In the Asian hard-court swing, which starts after the US Open, Elina will step on the court only at the Premier Mandatory-level event in Beijing.

As a WTA-tour leader by number of titles this year (5), Elina remains one of the main contenders for her maiden appearance at the WTA Finals in Singapore, the year-end tournament for the eight top-players of 2017.
