In the opening match of the US Open Elina defeated Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic: 6-0 6-7 (5) 6-3.

The match lasted two days as it was delayed on Tuesday due to the weather conditions. On a first day Elina grabbed the first set and was in the lead in the second, but failed to serve out the match at 5-4. The outcome of the set was decided on a tie-break, but the match was cancelled at 2-1 due to rain.

In a resumption of the match on Wednesday, Sinakova had a better start and went from 1-2 down to 5-2 on a tie-break. On her third setpoint Katerina forced a decider and took an early break in the third set. But Elina was able to swing the momentum to win the next five games in a row, which was enough to finish the match in her favor.

"Yesterday I played well, but Siniakova is also a good player, she knows how to come back into the match, which she did, Svitolina said in her on-court interview. - I was not lucky that our match was stopped, because I was playing well. Today, when we returned on the court, I was messy in my head, couldn't focus. My opponent was in a better position, because she had nothing to lose, so she could play freely. I'm glad that in the end I still showed good tennis. I fought for every ball. If you are not mentally strong at this moment, then you just have to fight and wait until you have your chances".

In the second round of the US Open Elina will play against Russian Evgeniya Rodina, who defeated Eugenie Bouchard of Canada. Elina leads the head-to-head record 2:0 (New Haven'16, Taipei'17).
