Elina marks a successful start at the second consecutive Premier 5-level event, which takes place in America's Cincinnati. In 1 hour and 40 minutes she outplayed her fellow Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko: 6-1 6-4.

Elina dominated in the first set, converting three of nine breakpoints and losing just one service game. In the much close second set only one break in the sixth game decided the outcome. Serving for the match, Elina saved one breakpoint and took the next two points to complete the match in her favor. In the tenth game, Tsurenko had one chance to regain the lost serve, but Elina played the breakpoint and won the next two draws to complete the match in her favor.

In the third round in Cincinnati, Elina will face World No. 37 Julia Goerges of Germany, who in the first round defeated Agnieszka Radwanska. This year, Goerges has won their first meeting in three sets in the Fed Cup tie on a clay court in Stuttgart.
