In her 20th main draw appearance at the Grand Slam tournaments, Elina needed almost 2 hours to defeat Australian Ashleigh Barty. The two have met earlier this year at the Fed Cup, where the Ukrainian top-player clinched a victory in three sets. Today Elina was close to losing the opener, but her opponent failed to serve out the first set with a double fault. From 4-5 down Elina won three consecutive games and took the lead in this match.
Coming back on court after a rain delay Elina immediately made a break in the 6th game, but didn't use her advantage and lost the next game on her own serve. The outcome of the match was decided on a nervous tie-break: Elina was 6-3 up, however Barty saved three matchpoints in a row. Elina needed three more to finish the match in her favor with 26 winners, 23 unforced errors, 5 aces to 6 double faults and 4 of 6 converted breakpoints.
In the second round Elina will face 37-year-old Francecsa Schiavone of Italy. World No. 72 lost only two games in her opening match earlier in the day. It will be already their second encounter (Elina defeated the Italian in three sets in Baku in 2014). For the third year in a row Elina will try to score her first R64 win at Wimbledon.
