In 2 hours and 24 minutes, Elina finished her opening match against Alize Cornet at the Premier-5 level event in Italy, 6-4 7-6(11).

The French woman wasn't able to convert any of three setpoints on the tie-break, at the meantime Elina needed four matchpoints to set her spot in R16. In three previous seasons, Elina hasn't reached the third round in Rome, losing in her opening match last year. Later today she withdrew from the second round match in doubles with Olga Savchuk due to a gastro illness.

Elina will face World no. 60 Mona Barthel for a spot in a quarterfinal. Elina leads 2-1 in a head-to-head record against the German and also won their only meeting on clay in Nurnberg in 2014.
